STOP THE MELANCTHON QUARRY.
Melancthon and Mulmur Townships (only 70km away from downtown Toronto), in the County of Dufferin, are situated on the headwaters of the Grand and Nottawasaga Rivers. Also known as “Ontario’s Roof” these water systems, which are the source water for more than 1 million Ontarians are in danger from greedy American hedge funds who plan to dig beneath the headwaters to make way for the largest limestone reserve.
Not too long ago, The Highland Companies, which is financed by a Boston hedge fund called The Baupost Group, bought-up thousands of surrounding acres of Class 1 farmland in the area. They weren’t clear about their intention, claiming to have an interest in potato farming. Once the land was all secured, they showed their true plans, which is to dig the largest open pit gravel quarry in the history of Ontario. The proposal is to build the 2,400 acre mega-quarry, which will mine the limestone 200 feet deep.
The Quarry will devatste our waters. Not only will our water be contaminated and dangerous to drink, some of the most valuable producing lands/soils will disspear and drastically hinder Ontario farmers business. The blasting will also release toxic ommissions into the air which are dangerous to inhale, threatening our health. Ontarians is it worth it for a few bucks of foreign investment? Do we want to see our natural resources wasted away all in the name of money? What’s up at risk is just too valuable. Spread the word and STOP THE QUARRY
